The Commercial Lead role will proactively assist the Head of Legal and manage the commercial team in the provision of legal services for the operational assets, strategic projects, business development, transactions and general business activities. The successful candidate will also support the business in the provision of general legal advice and services to facilitate the achievement of its commercial and strategic goals. The Commercial Lead will play a pivotal role in supporting the growth and development of renewable energy projects in Ireland. This position involves providing expert legal advice on a range of commercial matters related to renewable energy, including project financing, regulatory compliance, and contractual negotiations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in energy law, combined with excellent commercial acumen and a passion for sustainable development.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

  • Work with the Head of Legal to manage and lead the commercial aspects of strategic projects and transactions to deliver the project or transaction in line with the Business objectives.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements for the Business including procurement contracts, IT agreements, trading arrangements and route to market contracts including PPAs, large supply contracts, contracts in relation to the construction of large scale renewable projects and professional services. 
  • Advise on employment matters, planning and environmental and non property related litigation.
  • Provide expert legal advice on all projects including renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, and other sustainable technologies, to ensure compliance with Irish and EU regulations. 
  • Advise the business on legal issues affecting all aspects of their commercial and operational activities and recommend appropriate courses of action and provide clear legal advice. Take a proactive role in finding solutions to overcome obstacles and in the management and mitigation of risks. 
  • Actively advise in the negotiation of key commercial contracts and transactions. 
  • Draft and review commercial agreements and liase with external counsel on specialist matters where required.
  • Monitor and manage the legal budget for projects or transactions. 
  • Ensure liaison with all key internal and external stakeholders including liaising with external counsel as appropriate to ensure that projects or transactions are delivered in accordance with timelines and objectives.
  • Advise on planning and environmental law including preparation and review of planning applications, assist in resolving disputes including negotiations and, if necessary, managing litigation with external counsel.
  • Manage a team of commercial solicitors. Collaborate with internal teams, external stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to facilitate project approvals and smooth operations.
  • All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises
  • Lead and Performance Manage your direct report(s). 
  • Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s objectives.

The Person:

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister. Strong understanding of the renewable energy landscape, including relevant laws, regulations, and market dynamics in Ireland. Ability to balance legal requirements with commercial objectives, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to legal issues.
  • Six years post qualification experience 
  • Professional subscription Law Society of Ireland or Kings Inn
  • Career evidence of excellence in team management and team working, personal integrity and operational excellence.
  • MS Office Suite – familiarity with Legal Case Management Systems an advantage, good organisational and administration skills, ability to work on his/her own initiative
